Area15 and Meow Wolf’s Omega Mart will make your trip to Vegas an out of body experience…

Have you noticed that the smell of pot is everywhere in Vegas these days??? You won’t have to get high to visit the new Vegas amusement venue called Area15 http://area15.com. Don’t worry they have plenty of good food and booze for those of us who always have to have a cocktail in hand…and my niece and nephew loved it. I have to say even our “older” husbands had a great time. By the way, check out the virtual driving range at Five Iron Golf and the flight simulator Birdly for our two favorite activities. Right now there is no charge for admission and you can pre purchase tickets for the activities on your smart phone in advance or as you wander around the building taking in the sights. On my recent visit the Meow Wolf’s Omega Mart was not yet open but there is a great article on the grand opening by Geoff Carter in the Las Vegas Weekly Magazine http://lasvegasweekly.com. He describes it as a “52,000 square foot immersive and interactive art installation.” You really have to see it to believe it!

According to Geoff the 200,000 square foot building that encompasses Area15 is a cooperative effort between NY based firms Beneville Studios and Fisher Brothers and it is devoted to unconventional dining (love love the tomahawk steak and cocktails at the BEAST restaurant), entertainment, retail and art. By the way, my niece Sydney got a killer neon green wig that she was so proud of…see my pics below:

Neonopolis will be the new “hot spot” on Fremont Street – I Promise!!

I had the privilege to attend the grand opening of Neonopolis thanks to reading about it in John Katsilometes’s column in the Las Vegas Review-Journal (only way to keep up with the happenings in Vegas…) I was thrilled to be part of the crowd watching the ribbon-cutting ceremony with Mayor Carolyn Goodman and Neonopolis owner Rohit Joshi. I had time in the morning to watch the amazing life story of Rohit at https://youtu.be/UYchuPDD08Q. WATCH THIS VIDEO – it is inspirational and a tribute to this remarkable entrepreneur. He must know everyone who is anyone in Vegas, Beverly Hills, Oregon, India, etc. – especially the International shopping center crowd. He called several new shops owners and VIP’s up to the microphone, including his very own charming “event planner” Britni Shields! They all did a great job explaining this cool new venue.

I have to say that Mayor Carolyn Goodman gave a great presentation – I personally love the way she stands up for Las Vegas, knows the history, businesses, and what is right for our economy NOW! She does not mess around and I always want to cheer her on: YOU GO GIRL! See my video of her speech below.

I toured the Hate League, The Axehole, The Watch Shop, and was so excited to see that my favorite long time Dallas restaurant – Dick’s Last Resort – will be opening this spring – can’t wait. OK, truth be told, I am over 60 so really had no clue about the appeal of some of these shops but I can’t wait to show off Neonopolis to my 17 year old nephew and 25 year old son. They are literally going to flip out on the skydiving ride where they fling you through the air, the axe and knife throwing with the HOT guides who teach you to “unleash your inner viking”, the video game parlor, Cat’s Meow, Karaoke, dining, and of course – for my friends who need a shotgun wedding – THE LITTLE NEON CHAPEL !!! I’m Looking forward to visiting again soon to see all of the newly opened businesses.

More CES Trends and Takeaways from Don Southerton

There were so many things that I could not see or watch during the “virtual” CES trade show. I love this summary by Don Southerton – it really tells us what the heck we should have been paying attention to! Cheers to next year’s January 5-8 show LIVE FROM LAS VEGAS !!!!! http://www.ces.tech

The 2021 All Digital Consumer Electronics Show—CES Trends and Take-aways
By Don Southerton
Last year at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) held annually in Las Vegas, Nevada there were over 4,000 exhibitors and more than 170,000 attendees. This year, with the event gone virtual, there are about half that number of exhibitors. Many big companies that in the past dominated the exhibit space opted out of CES 2021.  Still, the companies that did participate showcased many new, innovative products and something for everyone. Surveying the CES Show’s exhibitors and media coverage three trends stand out:
Trend 1
EVs and Autonomous, 5G & Smart CitiesDespite some top auto manufacturers not participating in the show, EV and AV has been the hot topic at the Show, as well as for those suppliers engaged in EV and AV technology. For 2021, along with autonomous vehicles and electrification, technologies included cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) and mobility-as-a-service (MaaS). Many of these technologies will be driven by the advancement in 5G networks, and overlaying 5G in smart cities.Bottom Line:With the upcoming Biden administration strongly promoting EV and Mobility solutions—companies large and small see a huge upside. Trend 2
Technology Blending Work & Personal LivesTied to COVID, numerous vendors have showcased products that bridge the gap between work and personal lives. For the past year many have been working out of home offices, and that trend probably isn’t going to go away. With many working from home, some of the biggest innovations in 2021 are in AI, and the greater use of voice assistants such as Google Assistant and Alexa. Expect to see more smart wearables, which provide a direct link to voice assistant providers without having to access your phone. Bottom Line: Look to digitalize our lives more in 2021.
Trend 3
Health, Wellness and Workplace safety
Also, in the wake of COVID, healthcare and wellness are also seen as strong trends at the 2021 show. More so, this years’ companies feel technology can benefit or change society as well as providing products and services to help individuals and companies get back to the “new normal” safely. This includes smart air purifiers, water filtration systems and UV disinfecting lights as companies look to fill the demand. Bottom line: People are paying a lot more attention to their personal health and wellness, and the health and wellness environment of their home and workplace.  And one more thing—Robots get more practicalCES 2021 finds robots taking on increased importance as ways to automate processes tied to COVID, maintaining social distancing, and serving as home companions and personal assistants. For example, in hospitals, robots are being used to take patients’ temperatures and vital signs as they come in and triage them accordingly, as well as disinfecting rooms using UV lights. A Show favorite is the South Korea’s Hancom Toki H2—one listed by Autoweek as “10 Cool Things from the Virtual CES—From flying cars to flexible dashboards.” Toki comes with many features and serves as a companion and personal assistant. The home robot allows for customized conversations between family members and users. It also actively engages in daily life based on facial recognition technology and educational content. Bottom Line: Looking into the year ahead we’ll find game changing robots serving in new roles at schools, hospitals, offices, gyms, and public transportation. So too, robots like Toki using AI can serve as interactive personal companions and assistants—the need for both public and private roles heightened under the pandemic.  Questions? Comments?  ###

CES 2021 – An awesome new world of virtual reality…

From 2021. If any organization can make sense of this new world of staying at home leave it up to the geniuses at CES to bring us a variety of global tech company “youtube” videos of their new products. I am “attending” the 2021 CES trade show even though I live in Las Vegas and look down from my balcony at the vacant convention center buildings. It’s so sad that I can’t actually wander the miles of hallways and experience the real CES like in the past. HOWEVER, the companies that normally participate have done an excellent job showcasing the latest and greatest high technology TV’s, household appliances, car gadgets, Artificial Intelligence (AI), health, and 5G innovations. My brain is on overload and thankfully I have a few more days to get through the video demonstrations – I really want to watch them all but I’m not sure I can manage between doing laundry, making happy hour appetizers to pair with different wines, buying online products, etc. You know, all the normal lockdown, stay at home activities…

Bellagio Christmas lobby display is worth it!

If you want to get into the holiday spirit, despite the depressing COVID daily report…, PLEASE go to the brand new Christmas display in the lobby of the Bellagio Resort. Figure a way to park for free (Treasure Island, Harrah’s sometimes, etc.) and make your way past the fabulous fountains and enjoy the view…by the way I was impressed with the number of folks walking the strip and hanging out. It is almost the old days…ha ha!

Brand new Circa is now one of my favs…

I have to admit that I love casinos. During the past several months of our Vegas COVID lockdown I never gave up visiting any open casino and have been so impressed with the safety measures they have had to install to make gambling safe. I was not allowed to take photos the other day in the Cosmopolitan but you would not believe the Plexiglas dividers at all of the tables, the masks on everyone, the temperature checks at most of the casino entrances and the “every other slot machine” social distancing. Casino restaurants are open – even our favorite Westgate EDGE steakhouse has bartender Mikey pouring his famous cocktails and server RAYMOND dishing out fantastic Chef Steven’s filets. I made my friends come with me to the brand new Circa which opened October 28, 2020. I have met co-owner Derek Stevens before but for some strange reason he did not invite me to the grand opening VIP party so I was left to figure out a way to scam my own VIP experience…lucky for me we met THALIA, the gorgeous concierge in the main hotel area and she gave us a personalized tour. We had cocktails by the 3 level pool and could watch a myriad of sports games at the outdoor cabana/lounge chairs. WARNING: you will be scared to death by the ridiculously long escalator ride up to the Stadium pool area. My friend Jena had to close her eyes and hang on for deal life and we searched for an elevator but had to take it back down – YIKES ! We had a great dinner at the Asian 8 East restaurant – seriously we tried almost everything on the menu…see my photos below:

CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2020 – You would “dig” this trade show…

We are in the throws of the Coronavirus pandemic scare and it is amazing to me that over 150,000 folks showed up for CONEXPO-CON here in Las Vegas – so I had to attend. My sister thought I was crazy for going but it was a risk I was willing to take.  How often in my almost 60 years of life would I ever be able to see HUGE cranes, dirt diggers, excavating equipment, and hunky construction guys in one environment??? I wanted to invite my single friend Judy to come chug-a-lug free cocktails at the IFPE hall – it was unbelievable.  Everyone was having a great time wandering around the Las Vegas Convention center looking at the massive cranes, drills, construction machinery, asphalt mixers, etc.  I am now officially a JOHN DEERE fan (their booth was over 38,000 square feet) and I even bought my new baby grandson a JD onesie!  Check out my photos.  Happy hour at CONEXPO-CON was truly a blast!
